Don’t Wait Until January: HR Compliance Changes to Watch for in 2027

A new year often brings new employment laws, updated regulations, and additional compliance responsibilities for employers. For small and midsized businesses, keeping up with these changes can be challenging, especially when employees work in multiple states or municipalities.

The good news? You don’t need to become an employment law expert. But you do need to know which requirements apply to your business and make sure you’re prepared.

A few areas to review before January:

Minimum Wage and Overtime Requirements: Minimum wage rates, overtime rules, and salary thresholds vary by state and change and can affect employee classifications or compensation practices. Review the laws in each state where you operate to ensure you are in compliance.

Paid Sick Leave and Other Leave Requirements: Paid leave requirements can vary significantly depending on where your employees work. Make sure your policies, accrual practices, and payroll systems reflect applicable federal, state, and local requirements.

Hiring and Pay Transparency: Pay transparency laws continue to shape how employers advertise positions and communicate compensation. Review your job postings, salary ranges, and hiring practices to ensure they meet the requirements in your locations.

Workplace Notices and Employee Policies: Check whether updated workplace posters, employee notices, or policy changes will be needed for 2027. Don’t forget about remote employees, who may have different posting or notice requirements.

One important reminder: Employment laws don’t always apply based solely on where your business is headquartered. The locations where your employees actually work can create additional obligations.

Taking time to identify applicable changes now gives you an opportunity to update policies, communicate with employees, and make necessary payroll adjustments before new requirements take effect.
